Abstract
Transparent phenol-formaldehyde resins are prepared by adding diallyl phthalate to a novolak prepared by condensing phenol or meta-cresol and formaldehyde in presence of sulphur dioxide. According to the Specification the diallyl phthalate may react with quinone methides in the phenol-formaldehyde condensate. In an example a novolak prepared by heating phenol and aqueous formaldehyde, adding sulphur dioxide dissolved in ethanol and evaporating off the liquid is powdered and calendered or kneaded with hexamethylene tetramine and diallyl phthalate polymerized to a value of 1.5 by heating it in presence of benzoyl peroxide. The mass is then moulded.
