Abstract

675,821. Erecting collapsed cartons. ESSSELTE FORPACKING AKTIEBOLAG. July 18, 1950, No. 17912/50. Class 94(i) In a packeting machine in which a collapsed carton having a foldable flap at one or each end is fed from a magazine and positioned obliquely in a rectangular recess in an intermittently-movable carrier with the or each flap projecting at right angles to the body of the carton, and on movement of the carrier is erected and pressed into the recess, the mechanism for erecting the carton includes grippers adapted to engage one or each of the projecting flaps and exert an outward pull thereon. As shown, collapsed cartons a are fed in succession from a magazine f by a reciprocating member g and positioned obliquely in rectangular recesses m in a rotary carrier i, the end flaps b passing over spring-loaded fingers j which turn them through a right angle. During the first step of movement of the carrier the flags are guided by side channels o in an arcuate guide member n, and towards the end of this step they pass between spring- loaded grippers 7 pivoted to plates s mounted on a fixed pivot v and located by an adjustable stop 11. A spindle t, interconnecting the plates is coupled by a link w to a pivoted arm x which is moved in the counter-clockwise direction by a projection 4 on an oscillatory disc y and returned to its initial position by a spring 5. The arm is temporarily locked in its operative position by the engagement of a spring-loaded pawl 2 in a notch in a fixed 'member 3, the pawl being released by a finger 6 on the return movement of the disc. As the flaps pass between the grippers, their forward edges are arrested by spring-loaded stops 9, pivoted to the plates s and supported on abutments 13, and the leading edge of the carton body is engaged by a serrated roller or rollers p, thereby causing the carton body to asume a slightly convex form. The arm x is then actuated to swing the plates s and cause the grippers to pull outwardly on the flaps so that as the leading edge of the carton is forced under the rollers p as the carrier comes to rest, the carton is partially erected, see Fig. 4 (not shown). At the end of the operative movement of the plates, the stops 9 are moved clear of the flaps by engagement with fixed abutments 12. After the release of the pawl 2, the plates return to their initial position, the grippers sliding idly over the flaps, and during the next movement of the carrier the carton is completely erected and pressed into the recess by the rollers p assisted by a blade spring 15. The rollers are mounted on a lever q adjustable by a screw r. The stops 9 may be omitted. The invention may be applied to a rectilinearlymovable carrier.
