Abstract

675,741. Wave-guides. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 2, 1951, No. 2651/51. Class 40 (viii). A wave-guide switch comprises a hollow metal body 1 having at least three wave-guide sections communicating with its hollow interior and a cylindrical metal drum 6 is mounted within to rotate with a small clearance gap, the drum containing one or more passages which connect one pair of guide sections in one angular position of the drum and a different pair in another drum position, quarter wave slots communicating with the clearance space to prevent energy leaking therethrough. As shown, four guide sections 2, 3, 4 and 5 are used and two passages 7 and 8 are provided in drum 6. Thus, guide 2 can be connected to either guide 3 or 5 while guide 4 is connected to the other of this pair. Quarter wave slots are provided in the drum and the size of the apparatus is chosen so that the distance between the opening of a slot and the adjacent passage is one quarter of the working wave length, measured around the circumference of the drum. In an alternative construction the distance between passage openings may be a multiple of a quarter wave length with a slot at each quarter wave length division. The top and bottom of the drum may be flanged to bear on the surface of the body 1, a conducting lubricating grease being used at this point or the drum may be mounted on a central bearing and have quarter wave slots to stop leakage from its top and bottom.
