Abstract

A substance for improving alkaline clay-containing soils is prepared by causing peat with its natural moisture content (about 70 per cent) to react with powdered anhydrous ferric sulphate and powdered anhydrous ammonium and/or potassium sulphate to convert the water in the peat to water of crystallization of the ferri-ammonium or potassium alum formed.
