Abstract

A thermoplastic cellulose derivative is plasticized by treating it while in solid form with an aqueous dispersion of a plasticizer in the presence of a cationic surface active agent. The cellulose derivative may be in the form of flakes, powder, fibres, yarns, or fabrics. Mixed yarns or fabrics containing fibres of a thermoplastic cellulose derivative and fibres of a non-thermoplastic nature such as cellulose, or of a thermoplastic nature but not of a cellulose derivative, may be treated. The treated webs or fabrics may subsequently be subjected to heat and pressure to cause the plasticized component to become tacky and so to bond or unite the non-plasticized fibres or yarns, or the fabrics may be used for the production of decorative effects by hot stamping or embossing. Cellulose derivatives may be treated in the flake or like form produced by precipitation or coagulation, and preferably they are treated before drying. Cellulose acetates of various acetyl contents up to the triacetate, and similar esters such as propionates and acetobutyrates, and also methyl, ethyl, and other cellulose ethers may be treated. For cellulose acetate, the plasticizer may be dimethyl phthalate, ethyl phthalate, triphenyl phosphate, methyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate, or o- and p-toluene ethyl sulphonamides. For cellulose butyrate there may be used dibutyl sebacate, di-2-ethyl hexyl adipate, or diethyl phthalate. For cellulose ethers there may be used dioctyl or diamyl phthalate, butyl stearate, or methyl ricinoleate. The cationic surface active agent may be a long chain alkyl pyridinium halide or a phosphonium compound, or it may be a compound obtained by acylating an unsymmetrical dialkyl ethylene diamine with a fatty acid chloride, the product being used in the form of its hydrochloride. In an example, an aqueous dispersion of dimethyl phthalate is prepared using cetyl pyridinium bromide as dispersing agent. Cellulose acetate staple fibres are immersed in the liquid at 50 DEG C. and subsequently removed and dried. In another example, a fabric containing cellulose acetate yarns and cotton yarns is immersed in an aqueous dispersion of methyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate containing lauryl pyridinium chloride. The fabric so produced may be used for making laminated fabric or it may be given embossed or similar patterns by heat and pressure treatment.
