A vehicle is provided with a receptacle at the rear and a boom pivotally mounted with hoisting means for picking up a dump container at either side of the vehicle, the boom and container being swingable to a position above the receptacle, an upright frame is movable forwardly on the vehicle out of the path of the swinging container and then movable rearwardly into engagement with the container at that position, means being on the frame for engaging and supporting the container above the receptacle when the hoisting means is lowered to dump the contents. As shown in Fig. 1, a receptacle 7 with a drop bottom 8 and pivoted lid 23 is secured to boom arms 12 pivoted to the chassis frame. The boom arms are raised and lowered by a hydraulic cylinder 15. The vehicle has guide rails 5 on which slides an upright frame 6, the receptacle being raised on the frame which is then moved forwardly to deposit the receptacle on the vehicle. The vehicle supports a telescopic mast 27 with a boom 31 which is rotatable through 360 degrees by a hydraulic cylinder 49 mounted on a bracket secured to the mast. The pistons of the cylinder engage sheaves 53. A cable 55 passes round the sheaves, and round a drum 54 on the mast arranged so that by operating the cylinder the mast is rotated so that the boom moves from a position in front extending over the driver's cabin to a position over the receptacle. The container 42 has a drop-bottom 46 and a cable 34 is secured to a member connected with the bottom. One end of the cable is secured at 35 to the chassis. The cable passes round a movable sheave 36 secured to the piston of a hydraulic cylinder 38, then round a fixed sheave 39 up the mast then round sheaves 40, 41 to the container. In operation the boom is swung so that the cable engages the container. The frame 6 is moved forwardly as the container is swung over the receptacle the frame being returned so that the hook 19 on the frame engages the bail 47, the cable 34 is slackened which releases the bottom to empty the contents into the receptacle 7. When the receptacle is filled it is hoisted by the boom arms 12 onto the frame so that the hook 19 engages the bail 20, the boom is lowered to release tbe drop-bottom 8 to discharge the contents.
