9 Claims. (Cl. 214-302) This invention relates to receptacle-emptyinggdevices, 4and more particularly to a vehicle-mounted device` ,for lifting a rubbish receptacle and dumping the rubbish into the vehicle. y Y
Among the several objects of theinvention may-be noted the provision of `a device of the class described for use on the side of a vehicle, and' particularly afdrumtype sanitation haulinggtruck having a side opening'for loading, vfor lifting upy a rubbish receptacle on the side of the truck and tilting the receptacle to discharge. its contents through the side opening and -into the drum of the truck; the provision of a device of -this class which enables the rapid and economical emptying of large heavy containers, which may weight twenty-live hundred pounds t l FIG. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section -taken'on line l 2 2 of FIG. l;

Referring to the drawings, there is indicated at 1 n FIG. l a typical drum-type sanitation hauling 'truck o'f the type on which a receptacle-emptying device of this invention is used. The truck has a drum 3 which is being 12o-innings bis 9 and siting nto discharge rubbish therefromV through opening 7 into the drum 3, the truck 1 is provided `with a U-'shaped hoorn generally dignated 23,:having extensible sides. kEach side of the boom is constituted by aV fluid pressure cylinder designated 25, more particularly a hydraulic cylinder. These hydraulic cylinders are mounted for swinging movement in vertical planes on opposite sides or" the opening 7 on a hori- VZontal axis extend-ing lengthwise or" the truck below the opening 7. For this purpose, each cylinder 25 at one end (its inner end) has a pin connection indicated at 27 with a bracket 29 attached-to the drum 3. Each cylinder has `a plunger 31 which extends out of its other and outer end, the outer ends of the two plungers 31 beingrconnected by la crossbar 33. yAttached to the crossbar 33 are two pairs of chains 35, one pair of chains being' for connection to the pins 19 on one side ot -a bin, the other pair being for connection -to the pins 19 on the other side of the bin.

This carries a transverse horizontal'shaft 47.r :Two pulleys 49 yand 51 are mounted on the shaft on one side of thev block andl two pulleys `S3 and 55 -'are mounted on the shaft at the other side of the block. At `the forward end of the cylinder 39 are bracket arms 57 carrying a horizontal shaft 59. Two pulleys 61 and `63 are mounted at one end of the shaft and one pulley 65 is mounted at the other end of the shaft. A cable 67 is anchored at one `end yas indicated at 69, trained around theV pulleys 49, 61, 51 and 63, then Vpassesaround a pulley 71 mounted on a Vertical shaft 73 extending up from the bottom of the box, thence outof the box through a side opening 75 in the box at Y the-rearward side of opening 7, and thence through a adapted to be tilted froml a horizontal loading position for rearward dumping, the drum 3 having a pivotedrear end gate 5. There is indicated at 9 in FIGS. 3 and 4 a-rubbish receptacle or bin of a type such as is used in Vlarge housing projects. From lthe above, it will be observed-that the means 36 for raising the boom 23 comprises aV pair of tackles, one including the pulleys 49, 521,561 and 63 and the cable 67, the other including the pulleys 53, 5 5 and 65 and cable 81. Both these. tackles are powered by the fluid pressure cylinder 39 which may be termed the hoisting cylinder. As shown in FIGS. 1, 3 and 4, this means comprises a pair of eyes 95- on the drum at the bottom of the loading opening 7.
Means is provided on the vehicle for preventing it from tipping over during the lifting of the bin. As shown in FIGS. l, 3 and 4, this means' comprises a hydraulic jack generally designated 97 comprising a cylinder .99, a piston 101 movable in the cylinder, and -a piston rod 103 extending from the piston 101 out of one end of the cylinder. The piston rod 103 is pivoted at its outer end upc-n the frame 105 of the vehicle vfor swinging movement on a transverse horizontal axis as indicated at 107. Y

With the jack in its lowered position as shown in FIG. 3, Huid under pressure may be introduced into the lower end of the cylinder 99 and vented from its upper end extending the jack so that it will lact as a rigid support for 4the side of the vehicle to prevent it from tipping over. After the lifting of the bin has been completed and the empty bin has been lowered back to the ground, fluid may be introduced into the upper end of the cylinder 99 and vented from its lower end for raising the cylinder 99, and then the jack may be swung back into retracted position as shown in solid lines in FIG. l so that the vehicle may be driven away without having the jack drag.
The boom cylinders 25, the hoisting cylinder 39 andthe jack cylinder 99 yare connected in a suitable hydraulic circuit including lines 11-1 and 113 connected to cylinders 25, lines 115 and 117 connected to cylinder 39, lines 119 and y121 connected to cylinder 99, and three valves 123, 125 and 127. Valve 123 controls the boom cylinders 25, valve 125 controls the hoisting cylinder 39, and valve 127 controls the jack cylinder 99. This circuit may be supplied with pressure fluid from the hydraulic power system already on the vehicle in the oase of the drumtype sanitation hauling truck.
Operation is as follows:
The truck 1 is driven up alongside la bin 9 which has been rolled out to fthe curb C with the gate end of the bin toward the street. The jack 97 is lowered to its operating position, and then valve 127 is operated to supply flu-id under pressure to the lower end of the jack cylinder 99 and to vent the upper end of this cylinder. rThis extends the jack and it serves -as a rigid support for the side of the truck to prevent it yfrom tipping over'. The boom 23 is swung down toa position such as shown in FIG. 3, wherein the crossbar 33 extends generally .centrally over the top of the bin, the crossbar being in 'thefretraoted position shown in solid lines in FIG. 3.
With the boom 23 in the lowered FIG. 3 position, and with the crossbar 33 retracted, the cables 67 and S1 are fully extended. The chains 35 are then connected to the pins 19 on both sides of the bin.
Valve 123 is then operated partially to extend the plungers -31 and the Icrossbar 33 to a position relative to cylinders 25 such as is shown in dotted lines in FIG. 3. Since the cables are fully extended, this results in upward swinging of the boom and lifting of the bin 9 to some extent. Then the valve 125 is operated to operate the hoisting cylinder 39 to haul up the cables and swing the boom up to the dotted line position shown in FIG. 3 in which the hooks 21 on the bin engage in the eyes 95 on the drum 3. This effects .a pivotal connection between the bin and the drum. Then Valve '125 is operated to continue the upward swinging of the boom and valve v12,3.i-s operated further to extend the plungers 31 and the crossbar 33 to a position relative to cylinders 25 such as is shown in FIG. 4. This results in tilting of the .bin as shown in FIG. 4, and the gate 15 on the bin swings open for discharging the contents of the bin into the drum 3. The empty bin may then be lowered by kreversing the above-described procedure.
In view of the above, it will be seen that the several objects of the invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained.
As various changes could 1be made in the above constructions without ldepart-ing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above descrip-tion or shown in the accompanying drawings shall lbe interpretedV as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. f
I claim:
1. In combination in a truck having a hollow body, a pair of extensible hoist arms, means pivotally mounting the inner ends of said arms on a side wall of said body, a transverse bar connecting the outer ends of said extensible arms, power means for extending and contracting said arms, a hoist cable extending from said bar .toward the top of the truck body, a second power means operatively connected to said cable for raising said arms, exible memberson said bar for suspending a receptacle therefrom, and abutment means on said body adapted to engage and tilt said .receptacle responsive to movement of the latter' by said hoisting arms.
2. In combination, a hauling vehicle having Ia drum provided with a side loading opening and means for lifting a receptacle and tilting it to dump its contents into the drum through said opening, said means comprising a U-shaped boom having parallel extensible side arms, each of said side arms comprising a fluid pressure cylinder having a plunger movable therein, said cylinders being pivotally connected at one end thereof to the vehicle for swinging movement in vertical planes at opposite sides of said opening, each of said plungers projecting out of the other end of its said cylinder, and a crossbar connecting the outer ends of the plungers; means carried by the vehicle for raising the boom from `a lowered position wherein a receptacle may be attached to the outer end of the boom, and means on the drum engageable by the receptacle when raised for eectirgl a pivotal connection between the receptacle and the 3. The combination of claim 2 wherein the means for raising the boom comprises a pair of cables extending from the crossbar at opposite sides of said opening, and means on the vehicle for hauling up the cables.
4. The combination of claim 2 wherein the means for raising the boom comprises a pair of tackles including a pair of cables extending from the crossbar at opposite sides of the opening, and a fluid pressure cylinder mounted on the vehicle for powering the tackles.
5. The combination of claim 2 further comprising pairs of chains at opposite ends of the crossbar for attachment to ya receptacle.
6. In combination with a drum-type sanitation hauling truck having a drum provided with a side loading opening, means for lifting Ian end-discharge rubbish bin and tilting it to dump its contents into the drum through said opening, said -bin having at least one hook at its bottom at its discharge end, said means comprising a U-shaped boom having parallel extensible side arms, each of said arms comprising a fluid pressure cylinder having `a plunger movable therein, each cyl-inder being pivotally connected at one end thereof to the drum, each plunger projecting out of the other end of its related cylinder, a crossbar connecting the outer ends of said plungers, means carried by the drum for pivotally raising and lowering said boom, and means on the drum at the bottom of said opening engageable by said hook for effecting -a pivotal connection between the bin and the drum.
7. The combination of claim 6 wherein the means for raising the boom comprises a pair of cables extending from the crossbar at opposite sides of said opening, and means mounted on top of the drum for hauling up the cables. Y

The combination of claimv 6 wherein ythe means for raising the boom comprises a pair of tackles includking a pair of cables extending from the crossbar at opposite sides of the opening, and a fluid pressure cylinder mounted on top of the drum extending lengthwise of the drum for powering the tackles.
9. The combination of claim 6 further comprising pairs of chains at opposite endskof the crossbar for attachment to a bin, the bin having pins on opposite sides thereof for attachment of the chains.
