Abstract

674,493. Control of two motors. KENNEDY, J. E. June 30, 1950. No. 16417/50. Class 38 (iii). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a system for lubricating bearings 11 of cylindrical rotary apparatus, lubricant is delivered under pressure from a reservoir 45 by one of a pair of pumps 52, 53 connected with a conduit 46 through pipes 54, 55 and actuated by electric motors 56, 57 respectively. Automatic control mechanism ensures that when the supply of lubricant from one pump fails, the supply from the other commences. The control mechanism comprises electric switches 58, 59 connected in the electric circuits of the motors 56, 57 through conductors 60, 61 respectively. The movable contacts of the switches are normally urged to circuit closing positions by springs 73 acting on pistons 66, 67 which are connected to pivoted arms 70, 71 carrying the movable contacts. The bottoms of the closed cylinders 62, 63 containing the pistons 66, 67 are connected by branch pipes to the pipes 54, 55 respectively. When as shown, the motor 57 is driving pump 53, fluid pressure in cylinder 63 maintains switch 59 open, and renders motor 56 inoperative.
