Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0674061/IV (b)/1> (wherein R represents OH or NYZ, Y and Z being H or alkyl), and the manufacture thereof and of their dihydro derivatives by reducing, by means of lithium aluminium hydride or lithium boron hydride in an inert solvent selected from ethers, dioxane and ethyl morpholine, a compound of the general formula <FORM:0674061/IV (b)/2> (wherein X1 is C and X2 is CH, or X1 is CH and X2 is CH2, and R represents OH, O alkyl or NYZ). The products, which form water-soluble salts with organic and inorganic acids, are useful as intermediates for the manufacture of therapeutically-active compounds. Examples describe the reduction of: (1) lysergic acid methyl ester to lysergol (formula (A), R=OH), which yields a tartrate by the action of tartaric acid in alcoholic solution; (2) isolysergic acid methyl ester to isolysergol (a stereoisomer of lysergol); (3) lysergic acid diethylamide to 6 - methyl - 8 - diethylaminomethylergolene (formula (A), R=N(C2H5)2); (4) dihydrolysergic acid methyl ester to dihydrolysergol; (5) and (6) dihydroisolysergic acid (I) and (II) methyl esters to dihydroisolysergol (I) and (II). Additional starting materials specified are the acids corresponding to the esters used in the examples. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 670,991.
