Abstract

Organo-substituted silicon compounds are prepared by reacting compounds of the general formula <FORM:0612822/IV(b)/1> or of the formula <FORM:0612822/IV(b)/2> wherein R represents an alkyl group, with an alkyl or aryl halogenide and sodium. The sodium used may be in a finely divided state or in the form of an amalgam, and may be employed in an amount equal to or greater than 2 gramme atoms per gramme molecule of the halogenide employed. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of an inert organic solvent, e.g. toluene, xylene, petroleum ether or liquid paraffin, or in the presence of an alkyl orthosilicate, or in the presence of a small quantity of a promoter, e.g. ethyl acetate or amyl alcohol. The silicon compound used as the starting material may be prepared by refluxing silicon tetrachloride and alkyl orthosilicate in gramme-molecular proportions lying between 1 : 3 and 1 : 1, e.g. by refluxing equimolecular proportions or by refluxing 1 gramme-molecule of silicon tetrachloride and 3 gramme-molecules of an alkyl orthosilicate until the temperature of the boiling liquid becomes constant. In examples (1) and (2), isoamyltrimethoxy- and di-isoamyl dimethoxy-silicone are prepared.
