Means for grinding or polishing the blades of agricultural implements &c. comprises means for reciprocating the blade while it is supported on a powerdriven grinding wheel 1 and pressed against the latter by a non-grinding roller 14. The blade 8 is carried from a pivoted arm 3 adapted to be oscillated by a connecting rod 4 attached to one of a number of eccentric pins 5 on a disc 6 which is driven by a belt 7 from a shaft 2. The blade is gripped between two pivoted jaws 10 on a holder 9 under the control of a lever 11, and the holder is rotatablyadjustable in a bracket 12 which is pivoted to a member 13 arranged for rotation about the axis of the arm 3; The roller 14 is rotatably mounted in a bracket 15 which is pivoted on the lower end of a slide 17 movable vertically in a block 18 under the action of an hydraulic cylinder 20 controlled by a foot-lever. Lugs 21, Fig. 2, project from opposite sides of the slide through slots in the block and cooperate with adjustable springs 22 engaging the upper face of the bracket 15. The plunger of a second hydraulic cylinder 23, which is also controlled by the foot lever, is connected to one end of a brake band 24 passing around a drum 25 on the shaft of the roller 14. The application of the brake prevents the blade moving forward too quickly, particularly should it be fed by hand. When the roller 14 is lowered, one of the lugs 21 acts through a pivoted lever 30 and connecting rod 29 to cause a roller 27 to tension the belt 7 and thereby cause the blade to be oscillated. The first Provisional Specification describes also a construction in which the blade is held in a holder at the lower end of a pivoted arm which can be swung by hand so as to reciprocate the blade across a grinding wheel mounted below the arm. The second Provisional Specification describes also an arrangement wherein the blade is reciprocated across the grinding wheel by a driving roller, and a spring-pressed roller urges the blade into contact both with the grinding wheel and driving roller.
