A traverser for handling railway vehicles comprises a roller unit for placing between the rails of the track, a platform for mounting over the rollers so as to be moveable thereon transversely of the track above the rails of the track and adapted to be locked against side movement with rails on the platform in register with the rails of the track, and a roller unit for placing outside the track to form a continuation of the roller unit inside the track. In the form shown, railway vehicles are moved laterally to and from their track by means comprising a platform 10 carrying rails 12 and mounted above the track for movement on rollers 20, 21, 24, 25. The platform 10 comprises a metal sheet overlapping the rails 11 of the track and reinforced at each end by a plate 13 carrying hinge pins for a plate 14 provided with rails 12<SP>1</SP> to serve as a ramp. Each plate 14 has turned-down parts 16 adapted to engage between the rails 11 to lock the platform 10 with the rails 12 and 12<SP>1</SP> aligned with the rails 11 and the plates 14 lowered. When the plates 14 are raised they serve to lock a wagon on the platform 10. The rollers are arranged in four sets 20, 21, 24 and 25 supported in angle-iron side frames 22, 26, resting on the bottom flanges of the rails 11. The two sets of rollers 20, 21 between the rails are joined by two iron strips 23 welded to the side and the two sets 24, 25 outside the track by similar strips 27. Several units such as 24, 25 may be placed end to end to bridge a gap between two tracks. For moving a passenger coach a platform and rollers may be provided for each bogie.
