Abstract
671,884. Grinding diamonds &c. INDUSTRIAL DISTRIBUTORS (SALES), Ltd. Aug. 11,1950, No. 20022/50. Class 60. A method of producing faces on diamonds or other crystalline substances consists in mounting the diamond in a dop carried by a tang which is adjusted approximately to orientate the face to be ground, transferring the dop and diamond to an X-ray goniometer to correct the orientation by adjustment of the dop and restoring the dop to its original position in the tang for the polishing procedure. The tang is adjusted to bring the axis of the dop unit perpendicular to the scaife by adjustment of the position of a stem 13 in a clamp at the end of the beam of the tang and by adjustment of two screw-threaded feet 3 with respect to a cross member 8. The. feet 3 have ball ends secured in slidable shoes 5 by split rings. A circular spirit level 16 facilitates adjustment' of the position of the tang. The diamond, or other crystalline substance, is mounted on. a solder dop which is secured to a dop carrier 21 secured by a cotter 26 to a pin 20. This pin is mounted for angular adjustment in a, forked member 19 secured to a pin 18 by a cotter; 25. The pin 18 is likewise mounted for angular adjustment in a forked member 17. To show the extent of these angular adjustments, vernier points secured to the pins 18, 20 co-operate with arcuate engraved scales on the forked members 17, 19. The two pins may be replaced either by a universal ball joint or combined in a single member with co-planar axes at right angles. After the tang has been adjusted to position the axis of the dop unit perpendicular to the plane: of the scaife, the dop unit is transferred to an X-ray goniometer and adjusted in accordance with the crystal orientation of the diamond. When the dop unit has been adjusted it is returned to its original position in the tang.
