Abstract

1,269,828. Dressing grinding wheels. H. F. SWENSON. 27 June, 1969, No. 32609/69. Heading B3D. In a wheel dresser the tool, e.g. a diamond 59, Fig. 1, is supported on a pedestal 58 carried by a swivel plate 47 supported for rotation on a vertical shaft 48, Fig. 2, and the extent of rotation of the plate 47 is limited by a stop 90 carried thereby engaging with stops 40, 41,. Fig. 1, carried by a pair of nested swivel rings 38, 39. The rings 38, 39 can be rotated to predetermined positions and locked in such positions by a screw 56, Fig. 2 and the ring 39 is braked against free rotation by a spring-loaded ball 43. In one embodiment the tool 59 is mounted in a vertically adjustable block 85 on a portion 65 of the pedestal. The portion 65 is pivotable about the axis of a shaft 68 relative to the rest of the pedestal under control of a cranked shaft 77 and is spring urged to its neutral position. It includes a vibration damping resiliently mounted weight 60, and between it and a cam surface of the main part of the pedestal are balls 80 which allow compensating movement of the tool to occur as the portion 65 pivots. The plate 47 rotates on balls 46 provided in a recess in a centre member 34 surrounded by the rings 38, 39. The plate 47 carries a vernier scale and the screw 56 is carried in a vernier block 54 to ensure accurate positioning of the plate. The centre member 34, block 54 and a dresser base 32 are carried by a plate 22 slidable on rotation of a knob 33 within dovetail grooves in a base 20, and fixable relative to the base by screws 25, Fig. 1, acting against a movable plate 24. Depending on the location of the stops 40, 41 the dresser may be used to produce a convex, concave, single angle or double angle contour or a combination of such contours on a grinding wheel. In a second embodiment the balls 46 are carried in a cage plate located between the plate 47 and centre member 34, and the carrier for the tool 59 is secured directly on the pivoted portion 65 by set screws.
