Abstract

670,805. Two-part couplings combined with switches. McGEOCH & CO., Ltd., W., and WATT, H. S. Oct. 23, 1950 [Sept. 28, 1949], No. 24891/49. Class 38 (i). [Also in Group XXXVII] A plug and switch-socket comprises a casing 1 containing fixed contacts 2 engageable by rectilinearly movable contacts 4 normally held by springs 7 away from the fixed contacts. A plug connected by a cable to currentconsuming apparatus is insertable through an aperture in the casing to force the movable and fixed contacts into engagement and at the same time become connected to the movable contacts. A detent 14, spring-urged into engagement with the plug, holds the latter in the casing. In the embodiment shown, the fixed and movable contacts are carried by bars 3, 5 respectively, the latter one sliding on rods 6 and carrying a pin 8 adapted to be engaged and depressed by the plug on its insertion and also serve as an earth connection to the plug. Contacts 11 on the plug engage contacts 10 carried by a fixed bar 9 and permanently connected to the movable switch contacts 4. Detent 14 is carried by the lid 15 of the casing and has a handle 17 on its outer end, its inner end engaging a tooth 13 on the plug. On withdrawal of the detent from engagement with the plug, the springs 7 produce a rapid break between the contacts 2, 4 and at the same time eject the plug from the casing. Additional plug-retaining means may be provided comprising a threaded boss 18 on the casing engageable by a threaded ring 19 captive on the plug.
