Abstract

670,709. Electric lighting fittings. ALDRICH, E. C., and STRONG ILLUMINATING ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Feb. 24, 1950 [Feb. 24, 1949]. No. 5050/49. Classes 75(ii) and 75(iv). A vapour-proof electric lighting fitting, of the kind comprising one or more fluorescent or other electric lamp or lamps, associated electrical equipment, and one or more reflectors enclosed in a lantern having an open side provided with one or more hinged or detachable cover window or windows adapted to be secured and sealed in closed position, is provided with one or more inlet valve or valves for introducing air into the interior of the fitting for raising the internal air pressure slightly above atmospheric pressure to prevent entry of deleterious vapours and gases past the sealing means. A glazed frame 4, Fig. 2, is adapted to make a sealed closure with a base plate 1 of the body A of the fitting which carries holders 2a for electric lamps 2 and a housing 3 for the associated electrical equipment, and is provided with an air inlet valve 11, of a kind used for inflating pneumatic tyres of motor vehicles, for charging the fitting with air at superatmospheric pressure. The glazing 4b is secured to the frame 4 by a hollow frame 6 which receives the ends of screws 5 threaded through perforations in the base 4a<SP>1</SP> of a flanged recess 4a. A substantially air-tight closure of the fitting is effected by the engagement of a flange 7 on the frame 4 with rubber or other packing gaskets 1b in a channel in the base plate 1, the frame 4 being held against the plate 1 by threaded pins 9 carried by pins 8a rotatable in sleeves 8 fixed to the frame 4, the pins 9 being secured, by wing nuts 10a, in slots in brackets 10 fixed to the body A. By releasing the wing nuts 10a at one side of the hinge pins 8a on the opposite side to give access to the lamps. The fitting may be provided with a pressure gauge for indicating the internal pressure.
