Abstract
670,694. Electric discharge lamps. CALLOW, C. P., and SPRATT, C. H. Dec. 10, 1948 [Nov. 11, 1947], No. 29973/47. Class 39 (i). An electrically energized luminous gas device of the kind comprising a gas-filled translucent envelope or envelopes and means for electrically energizing the contents has the latter formed of a directional array for radiating very highfrequency radio energy and the gas-filled envelope or envelopes disposed remotely from the directional array in the radiation field thereof. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the Yagi type directional array comprising a radiator 10 energized from a very highfrequency oscillator 11, a reflector 12 and directors 13 is used for energizing a sign or device comprising a number of gas-filled envelopes 14 formed into the shape of letters and carried on a support 15. The letters may be interchangeable and may be formed from translucent tubes containing neon or may comprise tubes coated with a fluorescent material. A plurality of directional arrays may be arranged so as to direct radio frequency energy towards the same envelope or envelopes. Specification 518,466 is referred to.
