670,651. Measures of length. GRICE, W. S. June 19, 1950 [March 18, 1949], No. 7482/49. Class 106 (ii). A surveyor's rod, or similar extensible measure, comprises a body portion and two rules or tapes which can be projected from it in opposite directions, the two rules being so connected or actuated that their movements are equal. The rules may be graduated from the free end inwards so that the length between ends can be read off from either rule against a fixed mark. The body may be of wood but, as shown, is formed of metal channels 1a, 1b joined by a web 2, the rules 4, 4a being accommodated between either face of the web and the inwardly directed flanges of the channels. Balls may be interposed to reduce friction. The rules are connected for equal movement by an endless band 6 passing round rollers 3 accommodated in gaps at either end of the web. Additional rollers (not shown) at intermediate points of the web guide the rules. One of the rollers may engage the band by means of sprocket teeth so that the rules can be adjusted by turning a handle applied to the spindle of the roller. The endless band 6 may be graduated to read through an opening in the body. Alternatively, a pointer working over a dial, or a cyclometer type indicator may be driven from the band. A writing tablet for recording lengths may be fitted to the body, and a battery-operated electric lamp may illuminate such tablet and the reading point.
