Abstract

Seeds are prepared for planting in the form of pellets by alternately: (a) spraying with an aqueous water-soluble plastic solution, e.g. methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, sodium alginate; and (b) dusting with a non-reactive finely divided substantially non-swelling and substantially non-shrinking p mineral, e.g. fly-ash, feldspar, acid-activated earth, while being continuously rolled, e.g. in a rotating container having a continuous curved inner surface, until a coating of the desired thickness has been built up around each seed. The finely divided solid or the plastic solution may contain, in addition, pesticidal compounds (see Group VI), inoculants such as bacterial cultures, fertilizers, e.g. calcium hydrogen phosphate, or plant stimulants, e.g. indole-butyric acid, alpha napthyl-acetic acid, dichlorophenoxypropionic acid, naphth-oxyacetic acid, alpha naphthyl acetamide, and soil conditioners, organic dyes or inorganic pigments.
