Abstract

A composition for stimulating plant growth comprises an antibiotic and a diluent inert to the antibiotic, in which composition the concentration of antibiotic is not more than 25 parts per million. The antibiotics referred to are oxytetracycline, thiolutin, penicillin, streptomycin, bacitracin, rimocidin and aureomycin; they may be used in the form of partially purified concentrates, salts such as hydrochlorides and sulphates, alkali metal salts, or complexes, e.g. the crude precipitate recovered from an oxytetracycline fermentation broth on adding certain quaternary ammonium salts. The diluent is conveniently water, solutions containing 0.5 to 10 parts per million of the antibiotic being preferred. Germination of seeds may be speeded by surrounding the seeds with a water-disintegrable composition containing the antibiotic in such amount that when the seed is planted and watered it comes into contact with a solution of the antibiotic having a concentration of not more than 25 parts per million. According to an example concerned with sowing seeds of sorrel (Rumex acetosa) on greenhouse flats of soil, watering tests flats with tap water containing 5 p.p.m. of oxytetracycline and watering control flats with ordinary tap water, there was accelerated germination, and then greater leaf formation and plant height increase, for the test flats; according to an example concerned with sowing seeds of sweet corn (Zea saccharata) in greenhouse flats of soil, watering test flats with tap water containing 5 p.p.m. of oxytetracycline hydrochloride and watering control flats with ordinary tap water, there were, after 4 weeks, increases in the number of germinations, plant height and tissue dry weight for the test flats. According to an example concerned with placing single seeds of sweet corn in gelatine capsules, filling the remaining capsule space with talc containing 10 p.p.m. of oxytetracycline hydrochloride for one group of seeds, and with talc alone for another group of seeds, placing a number of encapsulated seeds from each group in greenhouse flats of soil, and watering the flats, the proportion of seeds which had germinated after 5 days, and also after 8 days, was greater for the group having the antibiotic in the capsule.
