Abstract
670,267. Loaded cables. SOC. LIGNES TELEGRAPHIQUES ET TELEPHONIQUES. Feb. 9, 1949 [March 2, 1948], No. 3595/49. Class 36. [Also in Group XXXV] A cable is continuously loaded by a large number of very fine wires (less than 2 mils. diameter) of ferromagnetic material insulated from each other and inclined to the direction of the applied magnetic field. The magnetic stability if increased by the air-gaps between the wires across which the flux has to pass, and a desired value may be selected by varying the lay of the wires. A coaxial cable may comprise a central conductor 3 with insulator 4 such as guttapercha, polyethylene, cellulose triacetate, paper or polystyrene on which are laid one or more layers of bundles 1 of fine magnetic insulated wires which may have been produced as described in Specification 669,322, [Group XXXV]. The magnetic layer must be electrically interrupted at distances short compared with the propagation wavelength of the current in the conductors. A further insulating layer 5 and conductor 6 are then applied. Two such loaded cores may be enclosed together in a conducting sheath, and held together by spacers. Formulae are given for calculating the lay of the loading wires and the cable dimensions. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also references to the manufacture of magnetic cores of fine wires (see Group XXXV). This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
