670,110. Warping yarns. SOC. D'ETUDES ET DE MODERNISATIONS POUR L'INDUSTRIE TEXTILE, and LEBLANC, M. E. July 19, 1949 [June 21, 1949], No. 16513/49. Class 142(iv) Tensioning yarns, Fig. 1. Yarns from a creel pass under and over smooth cylinders 10 and are wound on a beam 21 driven at a higher tangential speed than the cylinders; the yarns creep on the cylinders and reach the beam at uniform tension irrespective of the tensions with which they enter the machine. A presser roller 92 can be applied to a selected cylinder to prevent creeping at the entry end of the machine. The cylinders 10 nearly touch one another and are geared together by equal sized pinions; to facilitate insertion of the yarns between them, alternate cylinders can be raised by a hand-wheel 16. The beam 21 rests on a driving drum 30, coupled to the cylinders 10 by a belt 34 running on tapered pulleys 33, 35, whereby the relative speeds of the drum and cylinders, and hence the final tension of the yarns, can be adjusted. Alternatively, the shaft of the beam can be driven through variable speed friction gearing including, a disc 55 driven from the cylinders by a pulley 51, and a disc 57 coupled to the beam by a pulley 59. A roller 56 between the discs is traversed to compensate for the increasing diameter of the warp on the beam by a threaded shaft 68 rotated through a friction drive 62, 70, 71 and worm gearing 74; the position of the roller 70 is adjustable by a hand-wheel 82 to accord: with the thickness of yarn being beamed. The roller 56 is reset at the beginning of each operation by a hand-wheel 69, after disengaging the worm-wheel 74 from the shaft 68 by a hand-wheel 76. A hand-wheel 63 controls the force of springs 65, 66 acting on the discs 62, 57.
