Abstract

669,877. Centrifugal spinning-machines. McCANN, J. J. Nov. 22, 1949 [Nov. 30, 1948], No. 29866/49. Classes 120(ii) and 120(iii) In order to prevent collapse of the yarn mass within a spinning pot when the speed is reduced, for example, upon power failure or prior to doffing, a tubular support is expanded into contact with the interior cylindrical wall of the package while the pot is rotating at a speed at which the package is supported by centrifugal force. The tubular support is preferably a flexible sheet of aluminium or plastic material and formed with integral ratchet lips to hold it in its expanded form. The sheet 20 may be mounted in coiled position on the guide tube 7, and is held contracted by a housing 21 integral with an arm 62 and a sleeve 63 slidable on a vertical rod 18. Sleeve 63 carries a pin 10 normally engaged by a hook 11 of a traverse mechanism. The guide tube 7 is slidable on a tube 6 secured to an arm 66 pivotally mounted on the top end of the rod 18. When doffing is necessary, the hook 11 is released by a cam-operated link 13, whereupon the tube 7 drops into a chamber 9 and the coiled sheet 20 is forced downwards by pressure on a pin 19, by a cam-operated arm 41. The sheet 20 then expands and is held an open position by lips 49. All the sheets 20 associated with the pots of a spinning machine may be inserted simultaneously into their pots upon failure of power to the pot motors 1. In this case. cams are adapted to release the hooks 11 and force the sheets 20 from their housings 21. The cams may be operated by an electric motor connected to a battery, or by a spring or gravity loaded motor. Holes 8 are provided in the chamber 9 in order to draw the leading end of a strand into the pot when starting spinning. Specification 573,846 is referred to.
