Abstract

669,643. Batteries. CONCORDIA ELECTRIC SAFETY LAMP CO., Ltd. Jan. 9, 1950 [Dec. 9, 1948], No. 31867/48. Class 53. A charging stand for accumulators comprises shelves 16 from the underside of which the accumulators are suspended and joined in series. Spring contacts complete the circuit through a resistance when an accumulator is removed and are opened to cause the current to flow through the accumulator when placed in position for charging. The accumulators are suspended by means of a series of spacing blocks 22 fixed beneath the shelves and carrying plates 28 which engage rims 29 on the accumulators as shown in Fig. 7. Each block 22 is formed with recesses containing a continuous resistance coil as shown in Fig. 11. One end of the resistance is joined to a metal plate 33 which carries at its ends two spring contacts 34, 35 projecting in opposite directions. A third contact 36 is insulated from the plate 33 and is connected to the other end of the resistance. When no accumulator is present between a pair of blocks 22 the contacts 35, 36 engage one another and the current passes through the resistance. When an accumulator is inserted its terminals engage the contacts 34, 35, the latter being lifted out of engagement with the contact 36. The upper side of each shelf is provided with a series of blocks 23 between which accumulators waiting to be charged are placed. Spring-controlled pivoted indicators 37, Fig. 10, are moved to one side or the other when an accumulator is placed between the blocks to show whether it has been charged or is awaiting charge. A rotatable clock dial 41, Fig. 11, and a fixed indicator 42, may be fixed to each block 22 to show the time when an accumulator being charged should be removed. Fixed to each shelf is a trough 18, the front surface 19 of which constitutes a panel on which are mounted the necessary switches, fuses, resistances, &c. The shelves are mounted in tiers and adjacent tiers are electrically connected by cables 4 attached to plugs engaging sockets on the shelves.
