Abstract
669,636. Percussive drills. GARDELLE; L. C. A. July 5, 1948 [July 4, 1947; May 26, 1948], Nos. 18078/48 and 18079/48. Class 124. [Also in Group XXII] A rock drill, ,com,prises, a cutter, a detachable haft, a tubular stock, to which the cutter may or may not be detachable by a cone coupling, and a helical element which is diametrally expanded; for mounting on the stock. and which then Contracts to engage the. stock and drivingly connect with the haft As shown a tubular stock 4 has two conical ends 4a, 4b, the former mating, with a haft 2 and the latter with a cutter 33. Two helical springs 6 are compressed and slipped over the stock and, on expanding, grip the stock. The haft has two helical slots 7 into which are inserted the lower ends of the springs, the upper ends of which enter similar slots in the cutter. The cutting edges are formed on two plates arranged with interlocking recesses 39, 40, the outer edges of the plates wedging into slots in the cutter. A spring band may be fitted into a recess 41 in the cutter to hold the plates firmly in position. The cutting edges may comprise a diametral edge and two peripheral edges, the'plate carrying the diametral edge straddling that carrying the peripheral edges and having notches in which the forward ends of the springs lie for securing purposes, Fig. 12 (not shown). The cutter may be drilled to allow cleaning fluid to be discharged axially or radially.
