Abstract

669,188. Purifying water. MOORE, R. P. Sept. 1. 1949. [Sept. 8, 1948] No. 23630/48. Class 46. Lime is prepared for feeding, e.g. to a water softening plant by mixing the lime with a body of water and allowing it to settle to the bottom of the water body to a substantially constant water-to-solid ratio and thereafter withdrawing the settled lime for feeding without material change of the water-to-solid ratio. The lime is allowed to settle for a period of from 2 to 6 hours. As shown the lime is mixed with water in a tank 2 and the resulting pulp is run as through pipe 10 into a second tank 3 preferably of conical form for settling. The settled lime is withdrawn from the tank 3 by means other than the weight of the settled lime itself, as through a discharge pipe 25 connected downstream of an orifice 31 in a closed water conduit 29, while a pipe 11 is connected to the top of the tank 3 and to a point upstream of the orifice 31 so that the lime is drawn into the conduit 20 at a constant rate depending upon the flow of water in the conduit 29. The place of the lime drawn from the tank 3 is taken by water entering at the top of the tank 3 through the pipe 11 and is measured through a meter 16 as an indication of the quantity of lime drawn from the tank 3. Only a portion of the settled lime from the tank 3 may be withdrawn during an operation and a further supply of the pulp run into tank 3 for settlement before the next operation. A discharge pipe 22 communicates with the tank 3 at a point intermediate its length to enable displacing water to be discharged. In a modification of the apparatus the water taking the place of the discharged lime from the tank 3 is supplied to the top of the tank 3 from a reservoir above the tank.
