Abstract
668,915. Making sliding-clasp fasteners. SCOVILL MANUFACTURING CO.. April 14, 1950 [May 11, 1949], No. 9251/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXV] Sliding-clasp fastener elements are formed from preformed wire of " Y " section and secured to the tape in a machine comprising a slide 21, Fig. 8, reciprocated by an eccentric 22 acting on followers 23 and adapted to carry the end of the wire 24 past a shearing-knife 43 to shear blanks from the wire, a die element on the slider receiving the blanks and forming them into fastener elements and clamping members 47 to secure the element to the tape 26. The machine is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 8. The " Y " section wire is fed in steps through an opening 42 in the slider by a pair of feed rolls 25 driven by a ratchet-and-pawl 36 from an eccentric 40 on the driving-shaft 18. The tape is likewise fed upwardly through guides 46. As the slide 21 moves to the right in Fig. 9, a blank, sheared from the end by a stationary knife 43, drops into a die carried by the slider. During a period of dwell in the movement of the slider, a punch 45 descends to form the recess and projection on the element. The element is secured in the die during this operation by a holder 67 resiliently attached with some lostmotion to the punch 45. After the punch has lifted, the die carrying the element, moves forwardly to position the legs of the element astride the beaded edge of the tape where they are clamped by sliding hammers 47, Fig. 10, operated by cam surfaces 51, Fig. 8, on sliding bars 50 actuated by eccentrics 48. During this operation the element is held by a finger 61, Fig. 13, carried on an arm 60 and actuated by an eccentric. The tape then moves one step upwardly, lifting the element from the die and the slider returns to repeat the sequence of operations. The wire feed may be interrupted to provide a gap in the elements by a slider 54, Fig. 8, arranged to disengage the pawl 36 and actuated by solenoids 55 controlled by a counter 57 geared to the driving-shaft 18.
