Abstract

1279004 Making sliding clasp fasteners; punches TEXTRON Inc 25 June 1969 [19 July 1968] 32196/69 Headings B3A and B3W [Also in Division E2] A gap is formed in the stringers of a continuous filament slide fastener of the kind in which tapes 18 have secured to them by stitches 26, 28 stringers 10, each of which comprises interengageable fastener elements 12, including portions 12<SP>1</SP>, and portions 14, 16 connecting adjacent elements 12, by severing at least one element 12 of each stringer at each end of the length to be removed and also the stitches 28 along that length and removing in one operation the severed elements 12 and portions 14, 16 and the stitches. The slide fastener is placed between guides 62 on a stationary die 50 with the elements 12 and needle stitches 28 overlying an aperture 52 and cutting edges 54 respectively. A punch 58, having a cutting portion 72 at each end and a blunt ejector portion 74, is moved down through an aperture 60 in a presser member 56 until the cutting portions sever the elements 12 at each end of the given length. The presser member is then moved downwards to sever needle stitches 28 by forcing them on to cutting edges 54 and to sever looper stitches 26 at each end of the given length by means of cutters (73), Fig. 4 (not shown), on the lower face of the presser member. The punch 58 is then lowered further so that the ejector portion 74 engages the severed elements and displaces them together with the portions 14, 16 and stitches 26, 28 into the aperture 52.
