Abstract

1,086,709. Sliding clasp fasteners. SCOVILL MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 17, 1966 [Feb. 18, 1965], No. 2165/66. Heading E2S. [Also in Division D1 A sliding clasp fastener stringer comprises a length of tape T, a coiled plastics filament 10 along one edge portion of the tape, the filament being formed into a series of loops, each loop providing a fastener element, a cord 11 extending longitudinally through the loops and overlying the edge portion of the tape, the tape and cord being longer than the series of loops to provide an element free extension of said tape and cord and a line of stitching which holds together the series of loops, cord and tape, the line of stitching extending through said element free extension where it tightly binds the cord directly to the tape. In the construction shown the plastics filament is in the form of a coil which provides the loops and the line of stitching is made by a twoneedle sewing machine using three threads. The stringer is produced by a method which comprises feeding a long length of coiled filament having the cord extending through it, cutting gaps in the coil while leaving the cord intact, then sewing the coil and cord to a long length of the tape by a sewing machine, the stitches being maintained under the same tension through the gaps .so that the end portions of the coil, and the portions of the cord in the gaps are anchored firmly to the tape and then cutting the cord and tapes through the gaps to provide the stringers. This is carried out in a machine which comprises a table top 13, in a groove 12 of which the coil and cord assembly is guided. The assembly is moved along the groove by means of a feed wheel 26 actuated in a step-by-step manner, to a cutting station where the gaps are produced by a cutting tool 14. The tool has two cutting- edges between prongs 17 the prongs serving to line up the elements to be cut with the cutting edges when they penetrate between the loops of the coil. The head portions of the cut elements fall through a hole in the table top and the remainder is pushed into a groove 22 by a wedge-like projection 20 mounted on the cutting tool behind the prongs 17. Each gap is produced by a number of strokes of the cutting tool and after each gap has been cut the operation of the cutting tool is halted while the coil and cord assembly is fed to a sewing station. Between the cutting and sewing stations the tape is fed under a roller 23 into overlying relation with the coil and cord assembly. The operation of the sewing station is co-ordinated with that of the cutting station and after the tape has been sewn to the coil and the cord assembly it is conveyed away from the machine by a pair of rollers 28 to be subsequently cut through the gaps into individual stringers.
