Abstract
711,911. Making sliding clasp fasteners. TALON, Inc. Oct. 26, 1951 [Nov. 17, 1950], No. 25083/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXV] A machine for making slide fastener stringers comprises a reciprocable slide carrying a forming die, means for cutting fastener element blanks successively from the end of a continuous length of stock and positioning them in said die, and means co-operating with said die to shape said blanks so as to provide formed fastener elements, said slide upon movement in one direction positioning a formed fastener element astride a flexible carrier positioned opposite said slide, and upon movement in the opposite direction cooperating with said cutting means to cut and position a fastener element blank in said die. Wire W of substantially Y-shaped cross-section is fed upwardly by friction rollers 2, 3, through the reciprocable slide 4 which carries the forming die 10, to abut a guide block 8. Movement of the slide to the right, Fig. 3, causes a blank to be sheared from the end of the stock by a knife 9, continued movement of the slide positioning the blank in the die beneath a forming punch 14. The blank is substantially surrounded during the punching operation to confine flow of metal by the knife 9, upstanding portions 16 of the die, and a finger-like member 21 which moves with the punch and extends between the legs of the blank and the portions 16. The punch and member 21 are carried in a block 35 vertically slidable on a block 36, and are moved downwardly to effect the forming of the blank by a punch 43 adjustably mounted in a head 41 which is slidably mounted on guide posts 42 and actuated by a crank 54 from a drive shaft 56 with a handwheel 57 and pulley or sprocket 58 at opposite ends. The head 41 comprises also a cam portion 50 which engages rollers 52 in a slot 51 in the slide 4 to actuate said slide. On the return movement of the slide, to the left as shown in Fig. 3, the legs of the formed fastener element are positioned astride the corded edge of a stringer tape T which passes through a guide 23, spring urged towards the slide so as to maintain the edge of the tape in a slot 19 in the end of the slide. Tools 25, 26, Fig. 4, carried by the slide are actuated through racks 31, 32 fixed to the machine base on each side of the slide, to clamp the element around the tape on forward movement of the slide, the wire W being simultaneously fed upwardly into position ready for the cutting of another blank on return movement of the slide, Figs. 13, 14. The tape T passes upwardly between a roller 60 driven, through a ratchet wheel 67 on its shaft 62 from the drive shaft 56, and a roller '61 geared to the roller 60 through gear wheels 65, 66, the roller 61 being supported by a pivoted bracket 76 spring urged toward the roller 60. In a modification, Fig. 15 (not shown), the slide is double acting to make a fastener stringer at each end, and operated by an eccentric on a shaft positioned in an opening centrally of the slide. In a further modification, Fig. 17, two double acting slides 200, 201, are actuated by an oscillating shaft 222, to make four stringers at one time. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 668,915.
