A rolling mill comprising at least three rollers mounted symmetrically on parallel shafts to form a cage and formed with cam surfaces is characterized in that, to enable a billet to be rolled to dumb bell or mushroom shape in a single revolution of the rollers, the cage has a stop at its inner end to locate the billet inserted axially through the outer end, and the inner end of each roller is formed with a cylindrical part with which the billet makes contact during the reduction of the central or outer part of the billet, each cylindrical part having a depression to enable the billet to be withdrawn axially through the outer end of the cage at the end of the rolling operation. The rollers 2, 4 and 6 are mounted on shafts 8, 10 and 12 journalled in a housing comprising plates 15, 17, 19 and 21. Each shaft carries a pinion 16 meshing with internal teeth on a gear ring 18. External teeth on the ring mesh with a rack 20 which can be reciprocated with a stroke sufficient to turn the rollers through one revolution. The three rollers are identical and have a ridge 28 which extends circumferentially and increases in radius and width around the roller. In operation a heated billet is inserted through a hole 30 in the plate 15 until it engages a spring-loaded stop 32. The rollers are cut away at 33 to clear the tongs by which the billet is fed. The rack is operated and as the central part of the billet is reduced by the rolls the spring-loaded stop yields to take up the increased length of the billet. When the billet is for making a turbine blade one end is cut off leaving a mushroom-shaped piece of metal which is hot pressed to the final shape of the blade or the billet may be rolled with one head only. Two blanks for blades may be formed by cutting a double headed billet in halves. The ridges 28 may have coned outer surfaces for producing a tapered shape.
