Abstract

The invention comprises piperazine compounds, of therapeutic value for the treatment of traumatic and haemorrhagic shock, and of the general formula <FORM:0668761/IV (b)/1> wherein R and R1 are the same or different and each represents an alkyl radical containing up to four carbon atoms (e.g. methyl, propyl, butyl or especially ethyl), and their preparation by condensing a sulphonyl halide RSO2X (where X represents halogen) with 2 : 3 : 5 : 6-tetramethylpiperazine substituted on one of the nitrogen atoms by an alkyl group of up to four carbon atoms, advantageously in the presence of an acceptor for hydrohalic acid (e.g. sodium carbonate). Examples describe the use of the following starting materials: methane- and ethane-sulphonyl chloride and propanesulphonyl bromide; 2 : 3 : 4 : 5 : 6-pentamethylpiperazine and 4-ethyl- and 4-n-propyl-2 : 3 : 5 : 6-tetramethylpiperazine. 4- Ethyl - and 4 - n - propyl - 2 : 3 : 5 : 6 - tetramethylpiperazine are obtainable by treating 2 : 3 : 5 : 6-tetramethylpyrazine with excess of ethyl and n-propyl iodide respectively and hydrogenating the resulting quaternary iodides in water in the presence of platinum.
