Abstract

668,657. Capsuling machines. WILLCOCK, J., and HANNAH, G. Feb. 20, 1951. [Nov. 21, 1949] No. 29701/49. Class 125(ii). In a capsuling- machine of the type wherein the capsule is sealed by fluid pressure supplied to a pressure chamber a<SP>2</SP> containing a rubber or like cup, bottles with capsules loosely applied thereto are supplied by a feed conveyer c from which they are transferred one at a time by a finger k<SP>1</SP> to a vertically r e ciprocating bottle-rest g from which the capsuled bottle is pushed on to a discharge conveyer c<SP>1</SP> by the next bottle fed by the finger k<SP>1</SP>. A framework having a table a carries vertical supports a<SP>1</SP> upon which the capsuling head a<SP>2</SP> is vertically adjustable by a rack mechanism. A motor b drives through gearing b<SP>1</SP> a pump b<SP>2</SP> supplying fluid under pressure through a pipe b<SP>4</SP> to the head a<SP>2</SP> whence the fluid can return to a sump b<SP>3</SP> by way of a valve b<SP>6</SP> and a pipe b<SP>7</SP>. When the valve b<SP>6</SP> is closed, the pressure in the head builds up and capsuling is effected. In supports h on the table is mounted a spindle h<SP>1</SP> on which is splined a block k carrying pivotally the finger k<SP>1</SP> acted on by a spring k<SP>2</SP> which gives if a bottle jams. The block k is traversed to and from the bottle rest g by a rack and pinion mechanism h<SP>5</SP>, i. During the return stroke, the finger k<SP>1</SP> is rotated through 90 degrees in a vertical plane, so as not to foul the bottles on the feed conveyer c, by the spindle h<SP>1</SP> being rotated by a rack and pinion device l<SP>1</SP>, l. The bottle rest g, carried on a stem g<SP>1</SP> is raised and lowered by a cam g<SP>3</SP>. The valve b<SP>6</SP> is periodically closed by an arm m'' acted on by a spring l<SP>3</SP> and a cam m<SP>1</SP>. The operation of the valve b<SP>6</SP>, the raising and lowering of the rest g, the movement of the conveyers c, c<SP>1</SP>, the advance of the finger k<SP>1</SP> and the rotation of the finger k<SP>1</SP> are all effected through suitable gearing and a slipping clutch by a motor e. In front of the feed conveyer is a bottle stop n. In a modification, the finger k<SP>1</SP> reciprocates between two bottle rests rising alternately each with its discharge conveyer. In this construction it is not necessary for the finger to be rotated through 90 degrees.
