Abstract

437,265. Charging glass-annealing leers. FORSTER, W., Atlas Glass Works, Atlas Street, St. Helens, Lancashire. Feb. 28, 1934, No. 6515. [Class 51 (ii)] In a machine for feeding glass bottles or the like to a leer of the kind in which the articles, received in a reclining position from a continuously driven supply conveyer 4, are carried step-by-step across the mouth of the leer by a conveyer 8 from which they are transferred in batches to and erected so as to stand upright upon the leer bed 35, the transfer and erection are effected under the control of a dashpot by which the rate of charging can be adjusted as desired. As shown in Fig. 2, the supply conveyer 4 is fitted with holders or cradles 2 and is arranged with inclined runs so as to permit the movement of operatives or the provision of other conveyers in the space between the forming machine and the leer. The bottles 1 are detached from the cradles 2 by a projecting nose-piece on the guide 6, the latter serving to direct the bottles into successive compartments 8 of a carriage 9 carried by endless chains 10 which are intermittently actuated from the main driving motor 48 through bevel gearing and a Geneva stop device 40, 42. The bottles are retained in the compartments 8 by a plate 12 which, when a row of the desired number has been formed, is depressed by a roller and cam device 16, 17, Fig. 10, to allow the bottles to slide into transfer cradles 13. Simultaneously, the cradles 13 are tilted about the axis 34 to deposit the row of bottles on the leer conveyer 35 by pinions 29 which are actuated through cranks 26 by the piston rod 24 of a fluid pressure cylinder 23, the supply of fluid to the latter being controlled by a valve chest 22, Fig. 10, the plunger 21 of which carries a roller 20 engaging a second cam 19 on the shaft 18. The piston rod 24 is extended downwardly and carries a piston in a dashpot cylinder 50 provided with a control valve 51 by which the rate of movement of the rod 24 can be adjusted.
