Abstract

668,527. Spinning &c. machines. BAXTER BROS. & CO., Ltd., and GARNETT, J. C. July 18, 1949 [July 21, 1948; July 21, 1948], Nos. 19563/48 and 19564/48. Classes 120(ii) and 120(iii) Means for automatically forming transfer trails on wound bobbins in a spinning &c. frame having doffing arrangements of the type in which yarn remains connected to filled and doffed bobbins while a positive start is made on unfilled bobbins, after which the yarn is severed, comprises means whereby the yarn joining an unfilled bobbin with a full doffed bobbin is caught during rotation of the unfilled bobbin, wound around the periphery of the lower flange of the unfilled bobbin, and automatically caught and presented to a severing device which cuts the yarn to leave a transfer tail wound around the base of the unfilled bobbin, the spinning &c. then proceeding as usual to fill the bobbin. As shown, the lower flange 22, of a bobbin is formed with a helical groove 24 leading into a peripheral groove 25. The bobbin seats in a recess in a metal cap 32 fixed to the base 28 of a bobbin holder, and is positioned by pegs 29a; the bobbin holder fits over the spindle 29 and contacts. a drag-adjusting plate 31 mounted on the builder 30. A knife 35 is fixed to plate 31 by a holder 36 the lip 37 of which serves to hold cap 32 in place by engaging a flange 38 thereof. Cap 32 is cut and slotted to provide three fingers X, Y, Z. When the machine is started up after the full bobbins have been doffed and replaced by empty ones, the yarn leading from the flyer to a doffed bobbin is caught up in groove 24 of the empty bobbin, wrapped once around the flange 22 in groove 25, and is then caught by finger Y, stretched between points D and E and cut by the stationery knife 35. The'free end ofthe tail formed by the wrapping around groove 25 is driven by centrifugal force beneath finger Z and cannot lash about. Groove 25 may be dispensed with, groove 24 only being used; or groove 24 may be dispensed with also, a catch 40 being fixed to cap 32 between flange 22 and the edge of recess 33 and serving to catch the yam and cause it to wrap around flange 22. According to the first Provisional Specification, a bobbin having grooves such as 24, 25 may have a further guideway' leading from the peripheral groove to the bottom of the flange to lead the yarn beneath the flange and entrap it. According to the second Provisional Specification, a cutter and a guide therefor may be carried on a plate mounted on the spindle below the bobbin and rotating therewith.
