The ends of ribbons or straps which form the upper of a sandal or like footwear are passed through slots 3 in the insole 1 or in an intermediate sole and are retained in position by fastening devices 7 which penetrate the ends 6 transversely close up to the underside of the insole 1 or intermediate sole. These ends are then cemented against the underface of the insole 1 or intermediate sole and, after a filler 8, which may have recesses to accommodate the strap ends 6, has been applied, an outer sole is attached. The devices 7 may, where the straps &c. are broad, have two legs, as shown in Fig. 4.
