Abstract

668,402. Welding by pressure. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. June 15, 1950,[june 16, 1949], No. 16119/49. Class 83 (iv). In a method of stud welding in which a ceramic ring is arranged around the head of the stud and in contact with the work while the stud is being welded, a relatively massive metal member is provided in close thermal contact with the periphery of the ceramic ring. The metal member is, in an embodiment, a clamp around the ceramic ring 24 and comprises two metal, e.g. brass, members 16, 17; the member 16 having its main portion 18 externally threaded and provided with a knurled flange 19 while an extension has a frusto-conical surface 20 and is slotted at 21 to give a castellated form. The member 17 is externally knurled and forms a clamping ring with a frusto-conical surface 23 which engages the surface 20 to press it inwardly when the members 16, 17 are assembled with the ring 24 within the castellations. The large mass of the members 16, 17 is stated to prevent over-heating of the ring 24 and its consequent cracking. In downhand welding the clamped ring 24 is merely placed about a stud to rest on the work whilst in overhead welding provision, e.g. a spring, is necessary to hold the ring 24 in contact with the work. The lower edge of the castellated portion may be provided with one or more radial grooves which are aligned with a vent groove in the ceramic ring.
