In a washing-machine provided with a tub 3 having a water inlet I in its side, a valve 4 having a discharge nozzle 7 through which water is supplied, and a combined water conduit 9 and suds trap 11 for conducting water from the nozzle to the tub, the conduit has a U-trap below the water inlet I and a chamber 22 of substantial volume above the inlet I directly in the path of water flow from the trap. Water flowing at high speed enters the chamber 22 before flowing into the tub, so that when the valve 4 is closed, water remaining in the chamber will fall back into the U-trap 11 to ensure an adequate water seal against the outflow of soap-suds. Warm water for pre-soaking and rinsing is supplied to the funnel-mouthed end 10 of the conduit across an air gap, from the nozzle 7 controlled by a solenoid 5. This solenoid is energized by a time-switch (not shown) and also controls a hot water nozzle 6 whose position may be adjusted by means of a saddle clamp 8. The conduit 9 may comprise a flat back wall and a rounded front wall, stamped from light metal and crimped and soldered together around their margins.
