668,144. Diamond tools. ST. CLAIR, J. Q. Aug. 29, 1950 [Aug. 29, 1949], No. 21332/50. Class 124. A diamond-tool comprises diamond particles 4 between stacks of metal sheets 1, 2, 9 which are bonded together by heat and pressure. The particles in each sheet are offset relative to those in adjacent sheets, and this distribution and adhesion of the particles may be facilitated by means of bonding sheets 3, 8 of synthetic resinous material or of low melting point alloy or solder, or by fine wire gauze 6 or indentations 10 coated with an oil or adhesive 7, 11 which may contain a flux for the solder. The pressure may be applied by a hydraulic or other ram, whilst the heating may be applied by means of a furnace, oxyacetylene or other flame, or electric resistance heating, and may be sufficient only to melt the solder &c. and soften the sheets to ease penetration of the diamonds, or sufficient to fuse the sheets into a solid mass 12. The diamondbearing parts may be integral with the body of the tool, or they may be made as separate parts 14 secured, for example, to a cutting wheel 13.
