Abstract
A composite strip for use in brazing comprises adhered components of at least two different materials, one of the components being a metal selected from gold and nickel and another being a frangible material selected from silicon, boron and germanium, the weight ratio of the components corresponding to that of an alloy of the materials, having a melting point below that of at least one of the components. In an example silicon powder is bonded to a gold strip to provide a gold: silicon weight ratio of 94:6, bonding being effected by rolling. The composite body will melt at the eutectic temperature of 370 DEG C. when heated between parts to be brazed. In another example two such composite bodies are assembled with silicon layers bonded. Alternatively a layer of gold may be bonded to a silicon-gold composite body. A backing sheet of molybdenum may be roll bonded to the silicon layer of the gold-silicon composite body or the backing sheet may be roll bonded to the gold layer. The ratios of the gold:silicon may be 90:10 or 96:4. Gold; germanium or nickel; boron composite bodies may be produced having weight ratios of 88:12 and 96:4 respectively, the eutectic alloy ratios.
