Abstract
667,406. Magnetic chucks. BOHLI, J. July 14, 1949 [July 23, 1948], No. 18606/49. Class 60. A pole-plate for a magnetic work-holding device comprises pole-bars 12 which are arranged side by side, are completely separated from one another by gaps 13, and have laterally extending wings 2a, 4a, 6a which intermesh with one another in the work-holding area of the plate, each pole-bar presenting a smaller area to the work than to the magnet. The pole bars may be made from laminations 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 assembled in the order shown and riveted together between side bars 1, the clearances between the pole bars being filled with non-magnetic metal or synthetic resin. The material below the broken lines 14 is milled off after assembly so that each pole bar is provided with a broad rectangular base to engage the poles of a magnet plate which may be of either the permanent or the electromagnetic type. To render the pole plate non-magnetic it is moved by half the pitch of the pole bars relative to the magnet plate. The pole bars may alternatively be made by milling whole steel bars or by casting. The wing thickness is between the limits of 0.5 and 1.5 mm. and the arrangement and relative area of the wings may be varied to suit different kinds of workpiece.
