Abstract

Alumina is produced by hydrolyzing an aluminium alkoxide, e.g methoxide, ethoxide, propoxide or butoxide with acqueous ammonia or dilute acqueous acid, e.g. acetic acid, at room or elevated temperature. The secondary butoxide, which is liquid, is particularly suitable. The product may be converted to g -alumina by heating at 450 DEG C. for 15 hours. The latter may be impregnated with suitable salt and treated to produce a mixed catalyst. If desired, the aluminium alkoxide may be absorbed in silica gel, pumice, kieselguhr, &c. prior to hydrolysis. The production of the alkoxides is described.
