Abstract

666,830. Reservoir pens. GEHA-WERKE GES. Nov. 16, 1949 [June 13, 1949], No. 29370/49. Class 146 (iii). A fountain pen comprises a main ink chamber and a communicating reserve ink chamber disposed adjacent the nib in front of the main ink chamber, and a manually operated valve, which after the supply of ink in the main ink chamber has been exhausted is adapted, when opened, to connect the reserve ink chamber with an ink duct in the feed bar, such that the contents of the reserve ink chamber flow under substantially atmospheric pressure directly to the ink duct. The reserve ink chamber a is filled with ink from the main ink chamber d through holes c formed in the cover b. A piston f normally closes a flow aperture g which connects the chamber a with an ink duct i in the feed bar. During the filling operation of the ink chambers d and a, effected by a piston k, ink is drawn into the duct i, through bores provided in the piston f and through a passage m into the chamber d. The fountain pen body enclosing the ink chamber d may be of transparent material, so that the level of ink therein may be observed. When the ink level is lowered to the level of the cover b the reserve ink chamber a is connected to the duct i by moving the piston k downwards. A control rod h secured to the piston carries the piston f downwardly, thus opening the aperture g and making ink in the chamber a available for use. In a modification, the body and nib section are moulded in one piece while the chamber a is provided with a conical aperture normally closed by a tube having holes at its upper end for the supply of ink from the chamber d to the ink duct i. The supply of ink in the ink chamber a is made available in this case by lowering the tube by downward movement of a piston. In a further modification, the flow aperture from a reserve ink chamber is closed by a flexible tubular slide valve which may be pushed upwardly to open the aperture by a slide member and downwardly to close the aperture by the piston used for filling the main ink chamber.
