Abstract

666,542. Reinforced concrete sleepers. SONNEVILLE, R. P. Nov. 18, 1949. [April 1, 1949] No. 29607/49. Class 104 (ii). [Also in Group V]. In a railway sleeper of reinforced concrete having a main reinforcement of metal along its longitudinal axis the reinforcement is formed of a steel girder, such as an I- or inverted T- section girder, with a vertical web 2 provided with vertical recesses 4 shaped to receive and interengage with correspondingly shaped heads of rail-securing bolts which extend upwardly therefrom through holes in the concrete. The example shows one end of a pot sleeper which has reinforced concrete blocks 1a cast upon both ends, the web portions of the girder within each end being provided with two dovetailshaped or segmental recesses 5, Fig. 3, communicating with vertical orifices of rectangular cross-section extending upwardly through the concrete, so that bolts with heads 9 shaped to correspond with the recesses 5 can be inserted downwardly and then rotated axially through 90 degrees to interlock with the girder web when the bolts are tightened. Rail-clamping members 14, which may be shaped as shown, or otherwise, for example as described in Specification 652,305, are held upon the projecting screw-threaded shanks of the bolts 8. The rectangular orifice 11 through the concrete and upper portion 6 of the girder web is disposed at right-angles to the longitudinal axis of the girder and, to prevent the bolt heads 9 from turning through more than 90 degrees, a pair of internal abutment stops are provided within the concrete by a pair of relatively offset passages 12a, 12b, Fig. 4, formed therethrough during the casting of the pots (see Group V). The reinforcing girder may consist of either the head or the bottom flanged portion of a rail cut horizontally through the middle of the web.
