Abstract

Textile materials comprising mixed yarns composed of staple fibres of acetone-soluble cellulose acetate of acetyl value (expressed as combined acetic acid) 49-57 per cent and staple fibres of cellulose acetate saponified to an acetyl value of 42-45 per cent are subjected to heat and pressure in the presence of moisture. Preferably the partially saponified cellulose acetate has an acetyl value of 44 per cent, and is used in amounts approximately equal to the amount of acetone-soluble cellulose acetate. The yarns may be treated as such or in the form of fabrics. Fabrics treated by the process of the invention retain their shape and have reduced creasing tendencies. The treatment may be carried out by passing the moist material through heated calender rolls at a temperature between 150 DEG and 200 DEG C., or by treatment with saturated steam at a pressure of from 20 to 30 pounds per square inch, giving a temperature of 110-120 DEG C. The steam treatment may be continuous or batchwise. The treated yarn may be finished in conventional manner. Treated fabrics may be dyed, waterproofed or given other finishing treatments. In an example a fabric produced from yarns composed of equal quantities of staple fibres of cellulose acetate of 56 per cent acetyl (calculated as acetic acid) and partially saponified cellulose acetate of 44 per cent acetyl is moistened and passed between calender rolls at a temperature of 175 DEG C.
