Abstract

666,125. Stuffing - box substitutes. KUTCHUKIAN, N. Dec. 30, 1947 [Dec. 24, 1946; Aug. 2, 1947], Nos. 34880/47 and 34881/47. Class 122(v) In a sealing device between a fixed member 111 and a movable member 106, 105, 104, the sealing action is ensured by two series of rings, the first one being provided with at least one gasket 100 having at least a contact surface with said movable member 104 of a spherical zone form, the centre of which is situated on the axis of said movable member 106, the second one comprising packing rings 116, 117, 118 applied upon one of said members or upon parts integral with said members, said two series of rings respectively ensuring the sealing of the rotational and the axial motions of said member, one at least of the contact surfaces of the rings of said two series being provided with recesses (e.g. 102) wherein a lubricating (and/or cooling) fluid is enclosed. The gaskets are applied upon their seats by resilient annular means rotated by the movable member; thus the gasket 101 is applied upon the seat 107, keyed to the rotationally fixed but axially slidable bushing 110, by springs 106a acting between a member secured to the shaft 106 and an axially slidable member 105 which rotates with the shaft. In this embodiment the series of rings providing the seal for axial movement comprise rings 116, 117 and 118 between spring loaded washers 114, 115 which are conically shaped relative to the rings 116 and 117 so that the force of the springs drawing the washers together urges the rings 116 and 118 into contact with the bushing 110, the packing assembly being urged against the ball 112 of the fixed member 111 by springs 113. The rings comprising this packing assembly are cut into segments which are so disposed in the assembly that the slot between adjacent segments is covered by solid parts of the adjacent packing ring.
