Abstract

665,815. Loud-speakers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Jan. 2, 1946 [Jan. 2, 1945], No. 129/46. Class 40 (iv). A sound reproducing device comprises an outer magnet 16 having a polepiece 17, and a centre pole 18 of opposite polarity, forming an annular air-gap for a coil 14 which operates a diaphragm 10, the centre pole 18 being hollow and containing a magnet 21 having a polarity opposite to that of the centre pole 18 with which it forms an air-gap for a further coil 15 operating a further diaphragm 11 arranged within the diaphragm 10. The inner diaphragm is connected so as to reproduce the higher frequencies and the outer diaphragm to reproduce the lower frequencies. The inner magnet assembly, consisting of a soft iron cup-shaped portion 22, 23 which supports the magnet 21 and polepiece 20 is readily detachable as a unit. The outer, conical diaphragm 10 is attached to the polepiece 17 at its outer edge by spider 24 and at its inner edge by a flexible member 28. The inner conical diaphragm 11 is attached to polepiece 20 at its outer edge by the spider 29 and at its inner edge by the flexible member 33 which is connected to a metal ring 32 anchored to the pole-piece 20. A compliant member 34 interposed between the two diaphragms allows them to vibrate independently. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the centre pole is solid and has its forward end provided with a recess, the magnet 21 being attached to a base which is detachably mounted in the bottom of the recess. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), it is arranged that the outer cone is geometrically a continuation of the inner cone. In this arrangement, the innermost magnet is mounted in a cup detachably mounted in a recess in an otherwise solid centre pole.
