Abstract

665,814. Musical drums. SOMERVILLE, J., (trading as RENO ELECTRICAL & ENGINEERING CO.). March 3, 1946. [March 3, 1945] No. 5361/45. Class 88 (ii). The head of a drum is tensioned by pulling it over a ring formed on an inner rigid openwork framework concentric with and fixed to the shell at points remote from the head. The ring is spaced from the flesh hoop as described in Specification 626,688. An apertured inner shell 3, Fig. 1, is provided with rolled over edges 3a to bear against the head 6 and can be moved axially of the outer shell against the tension of the heads. Each head is carried on a flesh hoop 7 which is adjusted to tension the head by pins 10 engaging in inclined slots 9 in the counter hoop 8. The pins are mounted on a ring 11 which can be turned round the inside of the.shell either by a worm 15 and rack 13 as shown for the top head or by a Bowden-cable mechanism 20 operated by a treadle as described in Specification 626,688 and is guided by rollers 12 or other guides. The two heads can be tuned to a selected low note by the worm and rack and can be temporarily adjusted for higher notes by the treadle. The shell is flanged to form a rim 2. In a modification, Fig. 2, the inner shell is replaced by a frame 21 fixed to the shell with intervening washers 22 and carrying pressure rings 21a. The two heads are tensioned independently by separate worm and rack mechanisms 25. The rim 23 consists in an angle member, provided with cam formations 23a to engage with similar formations on the shell. A tripod 29 having a central boss 30 is fitted to the drum shell so that the drum may be mounted on a stand with a universal connection. The rim mav alternatively be formed on the counterhoop, Fig. 3 (not shown). The shell may be formed in coaxial parts which are adjusted by means of pins 46, slots 45 (Fig. 4) or by a screw connection to a part 52 (Fig. 5). The shell may be elliptical (Fig. 6), or polygonal and may have tension-adjusting means 66 indicators 67 and snare control levers 68. Lidlike covers may be fitted over the ends of the drum. The hoops or rims may be covered by an internal frame forming part of a console outfit as described in Specification 650,021.
