Abstract

665,747. Aerials. BRISTOW, H. M., and BUCKINGHAM, J. Jan. 20, 1950 [Jan. 20, 1949], No. 1620/49. Class 30 (vii). A scanning aerial system comprises a primary element 5 associated with a lens 7 made of a non-dispersive dielectric medium and a prism 10 made of material, the refractive index of which varies with frequency in the operating frequency band. By varying the frequency of radiation from the wave-guide flare 5, the directivity of the radiation emerging from the prism 10 may be varied. The frequency modulation may be effected by means of a small moving mechanical member or by means of a reactance valve so that very rapid scanning may be achieved. The lens and prism are constructed of artificial dielectric media comprising metallic particles distributed uniformly throughout a homogeneous dielectric of low refractive index. The metallic particles may comprise discs of zinc sprayed on to a sheet of insulating material; preferably, however, they comprise short strips 14, Fig. 4, of metal sprayed or stuck on to an insulating sheet. Several such sheets are stuck together to form a block of the artificial dielectric material. In the lens medium the metallic particles are of small size compared with the operating wavelength so that the medium is substantially non- dispersive. The prism material, however, comprises metallic particles having dimensions comparable with the operating wavelengths so that they are capable of acting as resonant half-wave dipoles over the operating band of frequencies, whereby the medium of the prism is dispersive, the refractive index thereof varying with frequency.
