Abstract

665,715. Continuous casting-machines; casting processes. BATELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE. Aug. 22, 1949. [Nov. 2, 1948], No. 21746/49. Class 83 (i). [Also in Group II] Apparatus for continuously casting to ingot form titanium or zirconium, which metal has been produced by reaction between a halide of the metal and a metallic reducing agent (see Group II), comprises a chamber 76 into which the titanium or zirconium is fed by screw conveyer 58 from container 57. Heat produced by an electric arc between electrode 85 and the continuously produced ingot 93 serves to melt the incoming metal and to cause any contaminating reducing metal and reducing metal salt to rise as a mist which is condensed on the cooled chamber walls 71, collects in ring 97 and is taken off by conduit 99 to container 100. The ingot 93 is continuously withdrawn to an oil or water bath 95 by hand or power-driven rollers 94. Molten metal on the upper surface of the ingot is solidified by heat abstracted through the lower part of chamber 76 by cooling jacket 73. In the upper part of the chamber is maintained an inert atmosphere of, e.g. argon or helium which is prevented from leaking between the wall of the chamber and the ingot by flexible rings 90 which grip the ingot tightly. Specification 665,716, [Group II], is referred to.
